In their centenary year Ngati Porou East Coast won a Heartland Championship match for the first time since 2013. After 54 consecutive defeats in the competition Buller was defeated 50-26 at Ruatoria, then two more wins followed against Poverty Bay and Wairarapa Bush, giving Ngati Porou East Coast their best record since the 2012 team that won the Meads Cup. The win-loss record could have been further improved as West Coast won with a try three minutes from the end.

The team played flowing, exciting football which was made possible by the team’s overall fitness. A bonus point for four tries was scored in all but the Thames Valley and South Canterbury games, who were the two teams that eventually made the Meads Cup final.

Coach Hosea Gear was able to entice former All Blacks in his brother Rico (one match), Ma’a Nonu, and Nehe Milner-Skudder (one match) as well as current New Zealand Sevens rep Ngarohi McGarvey-Black and former Hurricane/Samoan international Faifili Levave during the course of the season, and even took the field himself twice. Nonu created the most interest. He did not try too much individually, instead he concentrated more on setting up the players around him.

Others to debut with previous first-class experience were Will Bolingford, Jody Tuhaka, Myles Tawa, Gabe Te Kani (all Poverty Bay), Trent Boswell-Wakefield (Hawke’s Bay), and Peter Mirrielees (Otago), while Te Rangi Fraser had returned from Bay of Plenty and Adrian Collier had last represented in 2005.

Loose forward Hone Haerewa, the captain, was outstanding, passing 50 games for the union.

He was an excellent tackler, tenacious at the breakdown, won a lot of lineout ball, and had good instinct as a support player. Hooker Jorian Tangaere was not far behind, playing almost like a fourth loose forward and performed his core roles well in the scrum and lineout.

Flanker Tanira Tamanui-Nepia had a strong debut season and fellow loosie Will Bolingford shone against West Coast. Lock Gabe Te Kani won some good lineout ball and prop Perrin Manuel was the only forward to start every game.

The two standouts in the backline were halfback Sam Parkes and first five-eighth Te Rangi Fraser. They combined superbly and were both threats to the opposition individually scoring eight tries each. Parkes reached 50 games and Fraser’s goalkicking was on form, scoring a new individual points scoring record in a match for the union with his 25 points against Buller.

Ngarohi McGarvey-Black showed his sevens speed in scoring four tries in his four games, particularly the one he scored against Wairarapa Bush, and fullback Hamuera Moana always looked for the counter attack.

The Union celebrated its centenary with the Queen’s Birthday match against Poverty Bay.

Higher honours went to:
New Zealand Heartland: H.T.R. Haerewa
