Despite losing all three matches Ngati Porou East Coast were always competitive and in each match were able to threaten on attack, having the ability to hold on to the ball for extended periods, which has not always been the case.

A win in the opening match against Poverty Bay somehow slipped through their fingers 31-34 after leading 31-19 with 25 minutes left.

Captain and number eight Hone Haerewa was again the team’s outstanding player, covering a lot of ground and usually making good progress with ball in hand. Perrin Manuel was a mobile loosehead prop while at tighthead prop Hirini Delamere looked a good find. Loose forward Moana Mato shone against King Country and 18-year-old debutant lock Kyah Hollis was proving a good lineout source in the same game, until suffering a serious injury just before halftime.

First five-eighth Rapata Haerewa was another prominent debutant in the King Country match. Tawhao Stewart was usually able to provide thrust in the backline and Benny Haerewa was a determined runner on the wing.

Of the 11 debutants, Jorian Tangaere had previously played for Hawke’s Bay.

The match with King Country was played at Opotiki.
