Had this Union been able to place its strongest XV in the field regularly, it would without doubt have achieved a more attractive record than that of one victory in five matches. When it is realised that 33 players were called on to participate in these five matches, and that only three players appeared on all occasions it will be appreciated that a small Union faced an impossible task in attempting to produce this number of top Rugby players.

The most impressive backs were Hooper, a clever and experienced first five-eighth, T.M.Reedy a classy centre, Watson, strong attacker and defender, Karauria, useful winger, and the new five-eighth, de Lautour. The forwards were never able to stand out as a pack, 18 different players appearing. Most impressive were the props, two vigorous bustling players in Shelford and Ashton, Tamati, a lock, A.D.Reedy, as last man down, and side-ranker Ngatai.

There were ten players new to representative Rugby, Jackson having represented Wellington and Moeke, Bay of Plenty in 1960, in which year Kaika, Tamati, George Walker and Kururangi had last appeared for East Coast.

Of the previous season’s team, J.M.Paea was in Petone, and represented Tai Hauauru as a Wellington representative in the Prince of Wales Cup challenge.
