1965
(Founded, 1921; Affiliated, 1922)
Headquarters: Ruatoria.
COLOURS: SKY BLUE
Selectors: Messrs. E.Baker, W.Crawford and W.Stewart
A shortage of quality players again made the selection of the East Coast side a problem. All the matches were lost, some by wide margins, and the results were most unhappy to those who have given so much effort to building up the Union. It is a pity for the players, too, some of them deserving of much better opportunities than they were able to receive – only four tries were registered in the five matches, and the role was largely a defensive one. Another difficulty is in team-building, for of the 32 players who represented in 1964, twelve of them for the first time, only 13 were again called upon, whilst a further eight made then first appearance. A loss was the transfer of Frederick Jackson to Manawatu.
The leading back players were “Veteran” Hooper, good winger Haua, the young and promising Milner (who is such a fine attacking centre when given a chance), five-eighth newcomer, 18yr old Cross, and half-back Taare. The scrum was usually composed of the 1959 Thames Valley player , Penetito, at No.8, Whakataka and Manuel as locks, Wi Repa and Reedy in the flanks, and a front row of Walker and Henare, or Shelford, as props, the hooker being Murphy.
Karere Henare, Kopua and Miller had previously represented East Coast in 1963, in which year Reeves had played for Poverty Bay. Hooper, Haua, Milner, Taare, Cross and Wi Repa played the Combined team that met South Africa in the opening match its tour, with Penetito, Walker and Murphy being members of the New Zealand selection, played for New Zealand Juniors, and in the Prince of Wales Cup match.
