Conceding 116 points to North Otago in the opening round could have shattered East Coast. To lose by such a large margin at home could have seen many of the squad disappear into the hills or beaches for the rest of the season. To their credit, the squad hung in and gradually fought their way back into the competition.

They didn’t win a game but were so close to upsetting Horowhenua Kapiti in the last game.Again there were a large number of players used. The one constant of East Coast rugby in recent years has been halfback, and captain, Charlie Harrison who has appeared in every championship game since 2006. Fullback Verdon Bartlett was the only other back to start every competition game.

Others to appear in live or more games were Roha Dalton-Reedy, Doone Harrison, Matt Marino, Whakarae Henare, Riki Crawford, Nathan Langsford and Lance Maaka. The forwards were a more regular combination than the backs, lock Richard Scholefield and flanker Darryl Baker starting every game and flanker Pakanui Webb missing just one.

Prop Tom Kahukiwa was one of the side’s best players. Gordon Hinaki was the regular hooker. Puri Hauiti was the union’s Origin player.
