With only a single victory to set against losses in the remaining games, East Coast found it difficult to place a sufficiently strong side in the field, and again this year required 33 players to meet seven opponents. The pack wanted in weight, the heavy losses in most matches being due mainly to its failure to win the ball. In the loose, forwards such as Jackson, Lima, Reedy and Mannel were quite effective, The hookers were Shelford or Murphy; Tamati and a new representative, Sinel, were the regular locks; Walker was a lively prop. Brown was an experienced half-back; Hooper very sound and reliable at first five-eighth. With more opportunities on attack P.T.Karaka could have impressed more. The centre was usually the young and highly promising Milner; Fox was a lively winger; K.E.R.Karaka remained a full-back of more than average ability. A severe loss was the departure of T.M.Reedy to Thames Valley. P.T.Karaka and R.Ngata had last represented in 1960, Haua in 1959 and Maxwell in 1958.
