Tairāwhiti Rising Legends (TRL) is an initiative aimed at recognising, acknowledging and supporting the development of talented young athletes within Gisborne Tairāwhiti, a region that has a very proud sporting history. The programme aims to assist talented athletes in fulfilling their potential and gaining higher honours.
“The Tairāwhiti Rising Legend program really helped me tune the other aspects of being an athlete e.g. gym workouts, nutrition and even helped deal with nerves causing me to lose sleep! I was picked to be captain for the U/20 World Surf Lifesaving team that competed at the 2012 World Champs, this was a massive role for me but I remembered what the TRL workshops taught me and this helped me do my role well. The TRL program has been priceless to my development as an athlete.

“In 2008 I was fortunate enough to be a member of the Tairāwhiti Rising Legends. This gave me opportunities to learn skills that I have successfully integrated into my sporting career so far. I enjoyed my time with the TRL programme, particularly having access to expertise from outside of the Gisborne region to learn and gain valuable insight into what it takes to be an elite athlete. One of the most exciting attributes of the programme is bringing talented local athletes together from different sports to share experiences which I found extremely motivating.”

Since inception in 2007, 77 Tairāwhiti athletes have been inducted as Rising Legends. The programme has produced 40 New Zealand champions, 6 World Champions, 2 All Blacks, and an Olympian.

What is the Tairāwhiti Rising Legends?
The Tairawhiti Rising Legends (TRL) recognises, acknowledges and supports the development of talented young athletes within Tairawhiti. As part of the programme, aspiring athletes receive a $1,000 scholarship and lots of exclusive mentoring and development opportunities to improve their skills.
Since the TRL programme began in 2007, our Tairawhiti Rising Legends have been high achievers in the sporting world, producing New Zealand Champions, World Champions and, in 2012, our first Olympian.
All athletes must be residing in Gisborne and between the ages of 14 and 17 on the 1st of January, the year of participation.
