Ngati Porou East Coast – New Coach

Ngati Porou East Coast are excited to welcome Whetu Haerewa to the fold as our 2014 Heartlands team Head Coach.

Of Te whanau a Tuwhakairiora, Whetu is the sole charge Police Sergeant in Te Kaha and has become involved with the TVC club.

Our Chairman Campbell Dewes is ‘buoyed’ by his appointment as he has a wealth of experience as a player – of rugby and rugby league – and is “bedded down in our whanau and hapu centricisms”.

Further to his profession as a Police Officer, Whetu’s background is a colourful blend of community and cultural involvement.

Whetu has a great understanding of the Ngati Porou culture and is absolutely passionate about the development of Ngati Porou rugby at all levels.

So Whetu, nau mai hoki mai ki te wa kainga – here’s to a great season.

Whetu currently lives at Cape Runaway and he is currently the Police Officer in Charge of the Te Kaha Police Station.

Whetu has been associated with East  Coast Rugby for a number of years as a child playing rugby, club rugby for both Hicks Bay and TVC, Matakaoa Sub Union, The East  Coast 7’s team, Under 19’s,  Maori’s and the East  Coast NPC team

Whetu brings over 20 years experience playing and coaching at all levels of sport both here in New Zealand and overseas.Whetu has also coached swimming, Netball, Basketball, Touch, Softball, Rugby League and specializing in Rugby Union.
